The Route 66 linear parkway captures the local history and geography of
the "Mother Road" as it passes through Towanda. Brochures, murals,
pamphlets, maps on the pavement, and Burma Shave signs provide
information to enhance your knowledge of our local, state, and U.S.
history. Come enjoy the beautiful gardens and landscaping along the 2
1/2 mile Parkway. Benches and picnic tables are located along the road
for your convenience. Jason Nourie's third grade
class is among the volunteers who help with the parkway. Other volunteers

in response to the departure of original residents from the area and the
development of rural properties into business and residential areas for
nearby Bloomington and Normal. The hope was to preserve the rich history
of the area before it was too late. Much of the area history has been
captured and is available at the TAHS website (see above) as well as at
the Illinois State Library website (http://www.idaillinois.org).
Next on the TAHS agenda are capturing the stories of our veterans and
updating the 1976 history book.

Towanda
Senior Organization
President: Beverly Meginnes 728-2769
email:
bemegin@yahoo.com
The Towanda Senior Organization was organized by the Towanda Junior's
Organization in 1978. They meet monthly for a pot luck luncheon.
Meat and drinks are always provided. Members bring food to share and
their own table service. On some occasions there is a special
program, such as a speaker or musical entertainment. Each December the
Towanda elementary school third graders sing Christmas Songs at the
luncheon.
There are no membership dues. Most of the funding for the luncheons
comes from merchants both locally and in Bloomington, and sometimes
Lexington, who purchase ads for the annual Birthday Calendar. The
calendars are sold for $1.00 each at several locations.
The Senior Organization also has a bake sale at the annual Easter Egg Hunt
at the community building. The Towanda Boy Scouts usually make a nice
donation to the Seniors Group.
